Interpersonal traumas

Interpersonal traumas are experiences that occur within a relational context (such as childhood violence and abuse, sexual assault, physical and emotional neglect, etc.) and they undermine the sense of safety, well-being, and development of the victims. These harmful experiences are alarmingly prevalent, with nearly one in three individuals in Canada being victim of at least one form of abuse or neglect. Survivors of trauma are at higher risk of experiencing further victimization and developing multiple psychological and relational consequences in adulthood (such as symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress, difficulties in romantic relationships, etc.). Therefore, our research aims to better understand the consequences of childhood trauma on adults’ and couples’ marital and sexual functioning in order to reduce their impact and promote the well-being of victims.
